'I will continue to recommend these student apartments in Tucson to anyone coming for a short or long term stay.'
Ted has always been reliable and extremely helpful in making arrangements for our visiting students, teachers, and staff.
Walking through the gates of the Sahara brings a warm and welcoming feeling. The many amenities that you do not find offered in other apartments can be found here. For example, they have a sparkling clean swimming pool and spa, a fitness room, a student lounge, a computer room, a game room, and even a small movie theater.
The apartments are well cared for and include various options, from dormitory style to apartments including a kitchen. Ted’s no party policy ensures a nice, quiet study environment.
In addition, Ted has set up many safety precautions on the premises. Security cameras, an infra-red perimeter beam and an electronic key entry system all provide a secure environment. There is always someone on the property to take care of any emergency that may arise.
Transportation is never a problem as Ted provides a campus shuttle service and weekly grocery shopping trips. Also, tenants have access to bicycles. The Sahara Apartments are within walking distance of the U of A campus.
Overall, the Sahara Apartments provide a great environment for all. Ted is a caring owner who goes out of his way to make his tenants feel welcome and happy. It is truly a global experience where all are able to study, or relax and meet fellow students and teachers. The feedback I have received from my students, teachers, and scholars about Ted and the Sahara Apartments has been overwhelmingly positive.
I will continue to recommend these student apartments in Tucson to anyone coming for a short or long term stay.
'We fully recommend the Sahara Apartments for any student interested in living in a safe environment close to Pima Community College, downtown Tucson and the UofA!'
We have been renting apartments from Ted at the Sahara Apartments for over four years now and are incredibly pleased with the service, the apartments and the facilities that are available for our students.
We run both a yearly transition program and a summer camp for blind and visually impaired teenagers and transition aged youth and continue to use the Sahara Apartments each year.
The owner, Ted Mehr, has been a wonderful partner to work with and is not just the owner of the apartments but he really invests his time and care into the tenants. He has a great team behind him and they have been nothing but helpful for our students.
There are onsite facilities such as a computer lab, meeting lounge (which can be booked if you are needing space for a large group), cardio and weight gym and a safe, gated community – which have been a great factor when we were looking for apartments in the beginning stages of our programs.
The apartments themselves are well kept, provide a young student with everything that they need – a kitchenette, full bathroom with shower and bath, furniture to include a bed, desks and bedside dressers and closet space as well. We fully recommend the Sahara Apartments for any student interested in living in a safe environment close to Pima Community College, downtown Tucson and the UofA!

'My college housing experience has been quite eccentric, due to my residence at the Sahara Apartments. I have made lasting friendships with people from around the world'
I had an amazing experience living at the apartment complex as both a regular tenant and as a staff.
From my personal experience, I have been shown a lot of kindness from tenants, colleagues, maintenance staff, and the landlord, Ted Mehr.
I don’t think I’ve ever met another landlord who is as dedicated and passionate about his business as Mr. Mehr. From my own perspective, at most times Mr. Mehr really went out of his way to make sure all his tenants/short term rental guests residing at the Sahara Apartments were content, and received proper assistance whenever they acquired for it.
The community itself has a very friendly atmosphere and is composed of a diverse population of tenants including born-brought up Americans, and foreign students.
It was such a remarkable experience to live in Tucson, be a part of the University of Arizona, and yet feel like I was on a world tour everyday as I became more well-informed and educated about myriad of different cultures and traditions – having many of the overseas tenants from Sahara, as my first-hand mentors.
For example, many times I found opportunities to learn little phrases in foreign languages; try homemade cuisines from France, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Spain, Italy, Japan, and China; and I even got a glimpse of various authentic cultural attires.
My off-campus college housing experience has been quite eccentric, due to my residence at the Sahara Apartments. I have made lasting friendships with people from around the world, and I shall ever be grateful to such a lovely community!

'Anyone considering living at Sahara should know that they will be looked after by caring staff in a friendly community.'
Sahara’s “no-party” and “100% student living” policies meant the environment was very friendly, peaceful and relaxing. Sahara is also very popular with international students, so I was able to make friends from diverse backgrounds. The security cameras, infra-red perimeter beam and electronic key entry system provide assurances over the security of the property, and I never felt threatened walking around the property alone at any time of day or night.
I never had to wait more than a couple of days for a maintenance issue to be fixed, and I know first-hand that if an emergency ever arose, the staff would address it immediately, even if they were not on property at the time. With all utilities included in the rent, I never had to worry about the cost of using the A/C, internet or cable TV, and I saved a lot of money on fuel by taking the Sahara shuttle to the UA instead of driving. I regularly enjoyed the pool, jacuzzi, theatre and lounge rooms, while the gym and study room are convenient to have on-site.
Most importantly, when I look back on my time at Sahara, I feel happy. Anyone considering living at Sahara should know that they will be looked after by caring staff in a friendly community.

'We cannot say enough about the vast opportunities living at Sahara Apartments offers those students who are focused on achieving a well rounded college experience.'
As my husband and I prepare for graduation day and reflect fondly on the past four years, we would be remiss if we did not share how we came to find a home for Evan at Sahara Apartments. Our initial plan to purchase a home in Tucson fell through the cracks and with only two weeks remaining before commencing classes, we did not have a backup plan for where Evan would reside.
In a panic, I contacted UofA to explain our dilemma, but unfortunately, the dorms were full and there was a long waiting list. I was transferred to Off-Campus Housing (“OCH”) and directed to their website that provided what seemed like an endless list of off-campus living.
I spoke with an OCH representative and asked for a recommendation of one of the apartment complexes on the list. The representative informed me it was against UofA’s policy for her to endorse any given facility. However, she assured me that all were reputable and had been vetted/approved by UofA. The task before us was daunting…how to sift through the numerous listings to find the right student living facility.
First impressions are everything, and even more so when one must rely on the person at the other end of the phone to guide one through their facility – sight unseen. I had the pleasure of first speaking with a student employee in the front office of Sahara Apartments who was most helpful, informative and very patient in answering my initial questions about the facility. He fully understood my apprehension and immediately offered to have the proprietor, Ted Mehr, phone me upon returning to his office.
As promised, Mr. Mehr returned my call and again, I was impressed with the professional courtesy and care provided to me over the phone. Utilizing The Sahara’s website, Mr. Mehr walked me through the property, and I was able to get comfortable with his facility.
My questions were numerous! Mr. Mehr was extremely helpful and informative, and he took the time to understand what it was we were looking for in terms of student living. I was especially impressed with the questions Mr. Mehr asked of Evan, specifically as they related to Evan’s goals and aspirations over the next four years, his personality traits, study habits, what kind of college life experience he was looking for (i.e., study vs. party environment), etc. Needless to say, by the end of our conversation, a decision was reached and Evan agreed to make the Sahara his “home away from home.”
As it turned out, Sahara is truly an ideal “home away from home,” not just because of the “Quiet Environment” and the “No Party” atmosphere that prevails at Sahara, but also for the long list of amenities offered at Sahara that you will discover as you browse their website.
For example, Sahara sponsors social events for the residents both on and off site. On those occasions when events are held offsite, Sahara provides the transportation for the residents to attend those events. Sahara also provides transportation during the day to and from UofA, while UofA’s Safe Ride Program travels outside the campus grounds in the evenings to pick-up and drop-off students who reside at Sahara.
The security alone is a major comfort to parents who are concerned with their son/daughter living in a safe community. It is especially comforting to know that Mr. Mehr is genuinely concerned with the safety and well being of all the students. On those occasions when I had questions or a need to “check-in,” I would phone Mr. Mehr who was always gracious to speak with me and provide assurance that “all was well.”
As you will notice from the letter posted on their website, Sahara does actually deliver on its promises and all that is communicated on their website is not just “marketing hype.”
Mr. Mehr himself is a “hands-on” owner who is on the premises daily and guides not only his professional housekeeping, maintenance and grounds-keeping staff, but also his staff of student employees who work in the front office (Mr. Mehr offers employment opportunities, upon availability, to students).
The professional staff at Sahara are dedicated and loyal individuals, who have been employed for as long as my son resided at Sahara (if not longer). They are the same individuals, who greeted and interacted with me year after year, and who (together with Mr. Mehr) look after both the Sahara premises and its residents.
On those occasions when we visited our son, Mr. Mehr was front and center to greet us and we were always made to feel at home while at Sahara. As an aside, Sahara offers very competitive short term rental rates to friends and family members who come into town to visit students for a period of time and need a place to stay.
Four years ago, the OCH could not provide an endorsement of any one facility listed on their website, but as parents whose son has lived and fully experienced student life at Sahara, it is our privilege to wholeheartedly endorse Sahara Apartments, Mr. Mehr, and his staff.
We cannot say enough about the vast opportunities living at Sahara Apartments offers those students who are focused on achieving a well-rounded college experience (with just the right balance between studies and social activities). We are proud to say that our son has excelled in his studies, has matured into a fine young man, developed long lasting friendships/relationships, has abundantly enjoyed his social activities (including sports), and is most appreciative of his college life experience at Sahara.
In closing, our deepest gratitude and appreciation to Sahara, Mr. Mehr, and his staff for contributing to that college life experience. To every parent and student who is fortunate enough to discover Sahara Apartments, we wish you the same wonderful experience we have been blessed with over the past four years.
